Canadian History Choices for Homeschoolers

Here is what I have lined up for Canadian History for this year. I'm concentrating on the explorers and the natives:
  • Courage and Conquest (with Canada: A People's History VHS Videos from the NB public library, French available in DVD format)
  • Canada's Natives Long Ago (Donna Ward...got this second hand) Reproducible
  • Canada Our Home by Vince Marquis ( Donna Ward...got this second hand) this book ties in with The Kids Book of Canada (NB public library). It offers questions and activities. Reproducible .
  • The Kids Book of Canadian Exploration (there's a whole series of The Kids Book of-----. Really good series, easy reading, for all ages, all at the NB public library)
  • The Kids Book of Canada
  • The Kids Book of Canadian Railroads
  • Canada Close Up Series(Canada's Prairie Animals, Arctic Animals,Mountain Animals, Coastal Animals,Woodland animals, wetland animals....all available at the NB public library. Easy reading (kids can even read this themselves).

I'm tying in Canadian Geography as well:
  • Let's Explore Canada Grades 3-4 by Trudy Mauti and Deborah Sherman (Apple Press) (younger kids can do this, no problem)...this is a book of maps and worksheets on each province's resources, etc. Reproducible.
  • Our Home and Native Land / Canada Geography by Sonja E. Schild (Smart Toys Publisher) Reproducible worksheets on maps, cities, etc.
  • Geography Province to Province...a province by province worksheet and lesson book on geography, resources, politics, etc. More suitable for older kids but can tie in younger ones as well. Reproducible.

I got a few books that relate to specific topics here and there at yard sales and Frenchy's. I even got a 75.00$ picture book of Canada for 2.00$!!!

Besides this, we are doing A Beka Language Arts, Math U see, Konos for Science (hands on fun!), French vocabulary words, Draw, Write, Now for Art (drawing Indians and North American Animals)....and whatever else we find to do :)

Canadians Ordering Books Out of Country

This just in:

"Perhaps this is information that other homeschoolers will want to know.

I just contacted Canada Customs Agency and they informed me that if books for education are ordered outside of Canada, ask the publisher to specify that the contents of the shipment are books for children's education. They will therefore not charge and custom fees and they will give you a reduced tax rate.

Tks.

Diane"

Thank you, Diane! Great to know. :)

Crafts and Life Skills

Are you like me and can't remember what different kinds of crafts you could be teaching your kids? What about life skills? This link has a handy reference list and some things to watch out for when doing them.

Timeline Book

Here is a free printable pdf timeline called Book of Centuries (I printed off 3 for my kids. We plan to use it until graduation and just keep adding to it every year.) at the Simply Charlotte Mason web site. Lots of other great stuff here as well.

Viking Food

The kids and I made these oatcakes as part of our unit study on the Vikings. This simple recipe can be found at Ragnhild's Recipes. (*Note: Bacon/meat drippings can be quite smoky in the house. :) Make sure your frying pan or griddle is really hot. Works better.

Interesting Viking info:

L'Anse aux Meadows (from the French L'Anse-aux-Méduses or "Jellyfish Cove
located in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where the remains of a Viking village were discovered in 1960 by the Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad and his archaeologist wife, Anne Stine Ingstad.
A group of Norse colonists lived here around the year AD 1000.

The settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows consisted of at least eight buildings, including a forge and smelter, and a lumber yard that supported a shipyard. The largest house measured 28.8 by 15.6 m and consisted of several rooms. Sewing and knitting tools found at the site indicate women were present at L'Anse aux Meadows.
The settlement, dating more than five hundred years before Christopher Columbus, contains the earliest European structures in North America.

Viking, also called Norseman or Northman, refers to a member of the Scandinavian seafaring traders, warriors and pirates who raided and colonized.

In the 8th century was the arrival of missionaries in Denmark. Actual Christianization of the people was very slow and took at least 150-200 years.-taken from Wikipedia
